There are some places in the world that are sort of “must-visits,” some that hit just about every bucket list everywhere, like the Grand Canyon. For lots of people, Macau comes under that same banner.
Could you fall in love with Macau? Many people have. Renowned for bright lights, history, architecture, and its wonderful blend of Chinese and Portuguese influences - what does this place lack? Not much, as you’ll soon see if you set foot here. There are many, many things to do, many things to marvel over… and Macau really is a “has it all” kind of place.
But where should you start? It can be almost dizzying to touch down and try to figure out your itinerary, so I’ve compiled some suggestions just for you, with the goal of getting you on your feet straight away.
1) Go To Hac Sa Beach
It’s not a trip to Macau without leaving your footprints on this famous beach. Hac Sa Beach is known for its incredible sand - which is black! Smooth and wonderful, this has attracted people from across the globe, fascinated by the color and keen to press their toes into it. Be aware that unfortunately, due to erosion, the Macau government has had to add some yellow sand in recent years… but oh, it doesn’t spoil anything.
Stroll along with the sea air playing across your face and the tang of salt on your lips. At night, the beach is even better, resplendent with stars and the soft murmur of the water. There’s nothing like this as a way to start your time in Macau, and you might find yourself spending many hours luxuriating against the sands and just letting go of the stress of life.
2) Visit St. Paul’s Church Ruins
Church ruins might not instantly sound attractive, but there’s no question that these are worthy of your time. St. Paul’s Cathedral was one of the most incredible Christian monuments in all of Asia at one time. It was built in 1602, and tells an important story of the Jesuit priests who traveled in the area to spread Christianity. You simply can’t go to Macau without at least viewing it, as it’s one of the most famous sites - and as of 2005, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Centre of Macau.
Despite being a ruin, it is very worth seeing. Sadly, all that is left is the facade and a staircase. A fire destroyed the rest of the wooden structure in 1835, leaving visitors today to use their imaginations to travel back through time and picture the building in all its splendor.
3) Head For Macau Tower
When we’re talking about landmarks, we can’t leave out the Tower. Impressive architecture alert: this is the tenth tallest sightseeing tower on the entire planet. You need a high-speed elevator to get to the top!
Glass-fronted, the elevator gives you an incredible view as you sweep upward toward the observation deck. You can then step out, 233 meters above Macau, and see this city’s beauty from an entirely new perspective. Gorgeous, exhilarating, and kind of hard-to-believe, it’s a must-not-miss experience, and if you love it, you can take the Skywalk X, which will test your nerves by allowing you to walk around the outer rim. There are also restaurants and theaters, so you can stop and take a rest here if you need one.
And what better place to take a breather? Everything you could possibly want is here, and you can bask in the luxury. Chinese and Portuguese cuisine are both on offer, or just head to one of the cafes for high tea and a rest. The atmosphere is indescribable and you could easily settle in with a book or some games on your phone if you wanted a little break from the city.
4) Check Out The Casino Scene
You can’t really visit Macau without checking out the casinos, can you? After all, what is this city most famous for? The gambling! And while not everyone wants to dive headlong into this, it’s worth at the very least a cursory look, a dabble if you will. Macau has some incredible casinos that are worth exploring if only for the beauty and atmosphere - both outside and in, they are works of art.
That means they offer a pretty unforgettable experience for visitors from all walks of life. Keen gambling pro or total newbie, you can get something from exploring this world and tasting the energy and vibrancy going on in this space. There’s nothing quite like playing a roulette casino game in Macau, watching that wheel revolve and feeling the pulse of the city in your blood. Red or black, whichever lucky number you choose, it’s an experience not to be forgotten, and really part of the heart of this city.
5) Plunge Into Macau Museum
You likely already know that Macau has a fabulous and extraordinary history… but how much do you know about it? Once you’re there, it’s amazing to start learning more, and this museum is built into a fortress - making it an impressive visit even if it’s not normally your sort of thing. You can see amazing reproductions of Macanese buildings and wander through chronologically ordered displays that will teach you all about this incredible place.
