James Talarico 'Disappeared' To A Mental Health Facility: Report
On Sunday morning, independent journalist Nick Sortor gave James Talarico an ultimatum regarding his mysterious two-week absence from the campaign trail.
Good morning, @JamesTalarico! Would YOU like to reveal where you *actually* were these past couple weeks, or should me and @RheinAmacher do it?
β Nick Sortor (@nicksortor) October 11, 2026
Please let us know by 1pm ET today!
Thank you for your attention to this matter! πΊπΈ
Sortor and Rhein Amacher gave Talarico until 1 p.m. ET Sunday to explain where he had been.
The Talarico campaign did not respond, and Sortor followed through with his promise, releasing audio suggesting that an Ohio mental health facility discharged Texas state Rep. James Talarico, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate within the past few days.

Talarico's campaign attributed the absence to the flu.
On the call, Amacher asks a woman who answers the phone at the Lindner Center of Hope whether the facility has anything for James Talarico. A long pause follows.
"It looks like he was just discharged this evening," the employee says. "That's why I don't have it."

Talarico's campaign went completely silent for weeks, with the candidate finally returning to public view Friday at the Austin City Limits festival, where he spoke with festival-goers and posed for photographs. According to The New York Times, the visit lasted roughly 15 minutes.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton responded to Talarico's disappearance on Fox News Friday night.
"I've been in a lot of races," he said. "This is the strangest one I've ever seen. I've never had a candidate disappear for almost two weeks, doing no public appearances, no explanation of why until now. And then, suddenly, after missing appearance after appearance, canceling event after event, he suddenly shows up at a musical festival. Not to speak, but just to walk around. It was just a very, very -- it's been a very strange two weeks."
Ken Paxton is questioning James Talarico's recent absence from the campaign trail, calling it the strangest race he's ever experienced.

Sortor's audio confirmed circumstantial evidence Republican strategist Caroline Wren posted on Saturday from a flight tracker app that she said show a private plane traveling from Austin to a small Ohio airport near an inpatient mental health facility, then returning to Texas hours before the Democratic Senate nominee reappeared on Friday.
"What are the chances that a private plane took off from Austin and flew to tiny Hamilton airport in Ohio which is 20 mins from the Lindner Center, a private inpatient mental health treatment facility, and then turned around and flew back to Austin landing yesterday morning at 10:24am right before James Talarico magically reappears at the Austin City Limits music festival that afternoon?" Wren wrote on X.

While the Talarico campaign hasn't responded to this new revelation, former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt argued that the campaign's radio silence for nearly two weeks suggests they were definitely hiding something.
@EricLDaugh @nicksortor @RheinAmacher The Talarico campaign is hiding something big that voters ought to know about

"Guys. Let me share a little "secret" about campaigns...there's calculus behind EVERYTHING. And I do mean everything. Every word. Every image. Every debate quip. Everything, down to the color of the font you choose, is calculated to invoke a specific feeling, and most of the time, it's easy to decipher what the campaign is trying to convey with these choices, and that is the goal," he wrote. "So if you find yourself confused by something happening in a campaign, and you're thinking 'why would they do that?'...like...'how the hell could they think going radio silent for 2 weeks is a good idea in the closing weeks of a campaign?' They don't think it's a good idea. It's because the alternative is so much worse. If you think going radio silent and getting TORCHED online for over a week in the closing month of a $400M campaign is bad...just imagine how bad the real story was."
