The Off-Balance Sheet Time Bomb Inside AI Hits $4.1 Trillion: Up $1 Trillion In 90 Days
Two months ago, we said the off-balance sheet time bomb inside AI had hit $3.1 trillion. It is now $4.1 trillion.
Back in August, when Morgan Stanley's forensic accounting team led by Todd Castagno tallied up the hyperscalers' off-balance sheet commitments as of the end of Q2, the number had already exploded from the $1.8 trillion we first flagged in June to $3.1 trillion, an increase of $1.3 trillion in one quarter. Many assumed that pace couldn't possibly last. Well, they were right: it slowed... a little. Now that Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon and SpaceX have all filed their Q3 10-Qs, we have rebuilt Morgan Stanley's Exhibit 1 from the primary filings, line by line, and the result is that disclosed off-balance sheet commitments across the hyperscalers, Nvidia, Broadcom and SpaceX now stand at $4.11 trillion, up $992 billion from MS's $3.12 trillion tally (on a filings-only basis), or $4.29 trillion including the "news-based" items MS also showed. That's another trillion dollars in promises to pay, in roughly 90 days, that appear nowhere on anyone's balance sheet.
