::2014 list to ponder::
Denial is a defense mechanism, in which a person is faced with a fact that is too uncomfortable to accept and rejects it instead, insisting that it is not true despite what may be overwhelming evidence. The subject may use:
• simple denial - deny the reality of the unpleasant fact altogether
• minimisation - admit the fact but deny its seriousness
• projection- admit both the fact and seriousness but deny responsibility.
mining rig home heating system "I have two duct fans pulling the heat of the rigs that send it to the main furnace duct. Both the basement and upper floor are toasty warm, about 2800 square feet. We have had a week this year where it was below - 20 Celsius, that was the only time I turned on our traditional heating." - freedogger

deep thoughts on the Republic (and how to keep it) from falak
Most people will choose to remain comfortable in believing a lie than accept the discomfort of believing the truth. It's not the side of "truth" or "lie" that people choose to defend, but rather their predisposed comfort levels in their current way of life - even when they know it is morally and ethically wrong. - deo vindice
Double entry bookkeeping comes to mind. The greatest advantage those that control financial institutions have is the creation of debt. Double entry would indicate there is an asset offsetting the debt, however, this is not so. There is no asset only the debt. The debt is created out of thin air. The poor get the honor of paying the debt while the controllers of financial institutions game the proceeds of the debt and keep all the profits. -ACasey
It is no different than an identity thief shopping with someone elses credit card; your eyes open wide when you get the bill for the vacations and purchases someone purchased on your credit. Adding insult to injury, when you can not pay the bill created from that stolen credit card, the same identity thieves come and foreclose on whatever assets you have remaining.
It is a fucking sham legal verbal circle jerk. It is the old ISO 9001 quality control procedure loophole, just write a procedure that says you follow no procedures and you are in compliance.

If you want a different outcome, work for a different outcome and keep working until you achieve what you want. The only thing that can overcome the money that’s completely corrupted the system is smart, informed, people, using logic, reason and facts to inform and motivate other people. Until then, we’ll be caught in this ongoing trap of blaming one another instead of the wealthy and powerful who seek to use our differences to retain their own power and wealth.
First the English, and now the American bankers (since 1900), want market access to China. All they see are over a billion consumers that want a western lifestyle. It's growth don't cha know... And they want their hand firmly on the ME oil spigot, just in case the mandarins get uppity... ~spanky
In international law, odious debt, also known as illegitimate debt, is a legal theory that holds that the national debt incurred by a regime for purposes that do not serve the best interests of the nation, should not be enforceable. Such debts are, thus, considered by this doctrine to be personal debts of the regime that incurred them and not debts of the state. In some respects, the concept is analogous to the invalidity of contracts signed under coercion. -logicalman

We cannot solve the problem merely by eliminating wolves. If we killed all the wolves tonight, the sheep would start re-creating them tomorrow.
If we start convincing sheep to stop being sheep -- the wolves will do everything they can to murder the ones that wake up. They will see those few as cancer cells in the body of the herd. My solution is to outflank both sides, into the future. There is a single idea that the wolves and the sheep share. An idea cannot be destroyed, but it can suffer competition with other ideas. Let us convince the young who will grow up to be wolves, as well as the young who will grow up to be sheep that there is a better way to live. - mick_richfield
